What the cluster configuration screen asks for

  • • Cluster name, Kubernetes version, and the cluster IAM role
  • • VPC and subnets, the cluster security group, and endpoint access (public/private)
  • • Control plane log types and which add-ons to install (VPC CNI, CoreDNS, kube-proxy)

Node group configuration

  • • Specify the node IAM role, AMI type, instance type, and disk size
  • • Desired, minimum, and maximum size define the Auto Scaling range
  • • Choose the subnets for the nodes and decide whether to allow remote (SSH) access

Confirming access

  • • Build the kubeconfig with aws eks update-kubeconfig --name <cluster-name> --region <region>
  • • kubectl get nodes confirms the nodes reached Ready
  • • The IAM principal that created the cluster gets administrator access by default
